Northern Swell is Cinestream’s upcoming documentary featuring Welsh international longboard champion Evan Rodgers, whose world-class surfing career began not in tropical waters, but on the cold, steel-grey waves of Saltburn-by-the-Sea. Directed by Saltburn native Rich Alex Smith, the film blends modern surf cinematics with deep-rooted local history—tracing a lineage that began in the 1960s when Rich’s father, John Smith, became the first person ever to surf in Saltburn, crafting his own board in a garage because surfing here was thought to be impossible. Today, Evan carries that legacy forward: running the town’s surf hire shop, competing on the world stage from Morocco to El Salvador, and proving that one of Britain’s most unlikely coastlines can shape a champion. Northern Swell is both a love letter to Saltburn’s surf culture and a celebration of the pioneers—and the next generation—who continue to ride its wild North Sea breaks.
